Public Art

"Flying Robert"

"Flying Robert"
2012

Another version of an interactive art sculpture.
"Flying Robert" is not about me.  It started as a sketch idea of a child figure with an umbrella that my German neighbor saw on my desk.  He asked me if it was Flying Robert?  which is a character in a child's poem that he grew up with.  After reading the poem, it became my subject and title of this 17' tall,  turning and spinning kinetic sculpture.

A combination of the kinetic movement in "Wind Beams" in a more whimsical design.  This interactive sculpture has the added feature of enticing people, kids to make the ball spin and make the character dance wildly.

"The Big Blue Kite"

"The Big Blue Kite" 2008 was my first endeavor into public art.  It was made because of a challenge to the idea that the city of Vista could have any kind of meaningful art on public display.

We have "Kite Birds" by our shop.  Beautiful white soaring birds, that the kite toy was named after.  I liked the idea of a mobile, but I felt that the white birds needed some help with a focal point.  I chose to include the red characters looking up.

"Wind Beams" was part of the 2010 "Kites Over Vista" exhibit.  It  is  made from four 10' long I-beams connected to each other and balanced to move with the wind.  It is now on permanent exhibit at the Vista Civic Center.

2014  "PENDULUM
X 3"  Fun to watch and play with.  A truly interactive art piece that was complicated to design and more complicated to realize.  While it was working it had a lot of people smiling in amazement as it was such a busy gizmo!
